Bizcation: A Strategic Retreat for Personal Growth & Business Success
Jan 18, 2025
Have you ever felt like you needed the world to stop for just a moment so you could step off and catch your breath? Like you love where everything is going, but it's all moving a bit too fast, and you feel more like you're being swept along for the ride rather than leading the way?
You're not alone.
About three years ago, I found myself on the brink of burnout. Yes, me—the queen of systems and automations! My diary was full, my to-do list was overflowing, and I was snapping at my kids way too frequently. The dream business I was building and visions of a beautiful work-life balance seemed to be slipping away.
The Birth of Bizcations:
Over dinner one night, as I had my mini pity party, my husband casually suggested, "Why don't you just go away for a week?"
At first, I was like, "What about the kids, the clients, the business?” But he reminded me of the freedom I was striving for.
Then it hit me—this is exactly why I built my business: for freedom. And so, the concept of "bizcation" was born—a week each quarter dedicated to stepping away from being a mum, a wife, a coach, and a mentor, to focus solely on myself. A unique blend of business retreat and self-care for entrepreneurs rolled into one.
Facing the Guilt and Finding Freedom:
Now, if you're reading this and thinking, "It's all well and good for you, Emma, but I couldn’t possibly just drop everything and indulge myself," trust me, you want to read on.
Initially, mum-guilt was real. I started my business to be there for my kids, so why was I taking a week away? And one of the biggest reasons for being there for them was (and still is) that we don’t have extended family to lean on for support (we emigrated to Australia from the UK not knowing anyone—but more about that in another post!). So, who would look after them, who would pick them up from school, who would get them to school, etc.?
Making Bizcations Work For You:
Perhaps you have a similar dynamic, or maybe you're juggling your business whilst also being a single parent or you have some other pressing reason why dropping everything could (and I say could because I want you to remain open to how you can make this concept work for you) be difficult.
But guess what?
The world didn't stop. Everyone managed without me, and my business continued to thrive. The space and clarity I gained allowed me to return with fresh ideas and energy. I became a better mum and wife, with a quarterly stress outlet that reset my internal peace.
Overcoming the initial guilt and fear was a journey in itself. I realized that by taking care of myself, I was better equipped to take care of others.
So what the heck is a Bizcation?
My "bizcations" are a solo week away (I started with 3 days and have built up to a week now!) spent in an AirBnB, as close to off-grid as possible, just as long as it has brilliant WiFi. I don't have a set structure—no pressure, just a list of things I'd like to achieve throughout the year. If inspiration strikes, I dive in; if not, that's okay too. I indulge in long walks, massages, and lie-ins—whatever my body needs. It's a perfect blend of business and solo vacation, with no client calls. This time is sacred, a chance to recharge and reconnect with myself. The freedom to choose how I spend my days is liberating. Whether I'm brainstorming new ideas or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a cup of tea, each "bizcation" is a unique experience that nourishes my soul and fuels my creativity.
Managing Clients and Business:
And what about clients? Did I mention that I am a systems and automation queen!? Everything about the way that I have set up my business, and coach my clients to set up their businesses, is to ensure that my business can run smoothly without me.
All of my day-to-day tasks are set up in ClickUp, my content calendar, marketing plan, and my availability are also in there. My diary is marked well in advance with my availability, and all of my programs are designed with more than enough resources to support my clients in between our calls.
Something I stress is the importance of a bizcation structure, so my clients all know what to expect at bizcation time—and it is only a week! If your business can’t manage without you for one week, then we definitely need to chat 😉.
The Power of Stepping Back:
The support from my friends and family and the systems I had in place reassured me that everything would be fine. It was a powerful lesson in trust and letting go. It's amazing how stepping away can actually propel you forward.
The benefits extend beyond business growth; they touch every aspect of my life, from personal well-being to family dynamics. It's a reminder that sometimes, the best way to move forward is to pause and reflect.
Rejuvenation and Growth:
Stepping back has been the best business growth strategy. It has given me the objectivity and clarity needed to show up with enthusiasm.
My business grows, and personally, I feel rejuvenated.
Mum is fun again, and Wifey is energized—it's a win-win for everyone.
The impact of these breaks is profound. They allow me to return to my roles with renewed vigor and a fresh perspective. The positive ripple effects are felt not just in my business, but in my relationships and overall well-being.
It's a reminder that taking time for yourself isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity for sustainable success.
Advice for Starting Your Own Bizcation:
If you’ve been putting yourself last, it’s time to flip the script. Start small. If a week feels too much for you; allocate a day in your diary where you focus on just you. If finances are tight and you don’t feel ready to invest in a week’s worth of accommodation, consider house-sitting options too.
Whether it's a day or a week, mark it in your calendar with the same importance as an annual health check.
Call in favours, invest in childcare—do whatever it takes.
Your mental health and business success will thank you. Prioritizing time for yourself is an act of self-care that pays dividends in every area of your life. It's about creating space for growth, reflection, and rejuvenation. By making it a priority, you're setting a powerful example for others and paving the way for a more balanced and fulfilling life.
In Conclusion:
Taking time for yourself isn't just a luxury—it's a necessity. The positive ripple effects on your personal and professional life are profound.
